New Corona wave – but we do NOT have to reactivate the old protective measures

The coronavirus is spreading more strongly again; an autumn wave is already rolling in. On ORF, virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz explains the consequences.

Even though it may have disappeared from public perception, the coronavirus continues circulating. After the variant “Eris,” “Pirola” is now spreading to more countries; therefore, Israel even wants to reactivate an old protective measure.

Now, the first summer without restrictions is coming to an end. But how dangerous are these new variants for Austria? Are hospitals threatened by a recent flood of Corona patients in the winter?

Corona is on the rise – this vaccination recommendation is now fixed

Eris, for example, is “not that far removed from other variants.” A recent illness or vaccination with the latest variant vaccine should provide good immune protection. However, the expert recommends a booster if the sting occurred more than 12 months ago.

Based on the broad exposure of the population to coronaviruses to date, a single booster would provide good enough protection by now. The most current vaccine “actually works very well against Eris,” Redlberger-Fritz says. “Pirola might also have relatively good coverage because it’s also derived from the Omicron variant, but we still have to look at that.”

In any case, infection numbers are already on the rise again. He said that’s already visible in the sentinel system and wastewater monitoring. The start of school and fall, with increased indoor stays, will amplify it. She said: “We expect another wave.”

The health care system, she said, is in principle capable of handling one wave at a time, but if influenza and RSV occur together with Corona, it could lead to overuse again. That’s when vaccination is likewise instrumental in delaying or flattening the Corona wave.

This year, vaccination against RSV is also available for adults for the first time:

A mask comeback is “no longer necessary, but the recommendations still apply.” The medical professional compares the mask to sunscreen to protect oneself from infection. Suppose one already has a feeling of illness. In that case, it should be self-evident – no matter whether Corona or another condition – to wear a mask to protect one’s fellow human beings, Redlberger-Fritz contended.
